The University of Nevada, Reno, an NCAA Division I institution and Mountain West Conference member, is accepting applications for our 2019-2020 Assistant Academic Coordinator position. This position works 32 hours per week at an hourly rate of $14.80/hour. This is an internship position which runs from August 19, 2019 to May 22, 2020. The intern will gain exposure to multiple aspects of athletics academic services by working with advisers, coaches, and student-athletes. The Assistant Academic Coordinator, in collaboration with academic coordinators and student-athletes, will develop an individualized academic support plan to address the needs of each student-athlete on their caseload by:
a. Identifying early academic concerns through formal and informal assessments.
b. Incorporating strategies to adjust to the need of each individual learner.
c. Assessing student-athletes' academic progress.
d. Fostering academic accountability.
e. Educating student-athletes on how to communicate with professionalism and etiquette in a university setting.
f. Supporting student-athletes in identifying, seeking, and utilizing human and organizational resources.
g. Encouraging student-athletes to engage in a process of self-reflection to identify and continue to refine personally meaningful reasons and goals for attending the university.
h. Assisting student-athletes in developing a success plan by setting large-scale attainable academic goals and support them by completing smaller targeted practical tasks.
i. Monitoring personal transition to a competitive university environment.
j. Documenting progress towards goals weekly in academic progress reports and semester learning profiles
The Assistant Academic Coordinator will assist Athletic Athletic Coordinators by utilizing a variety of resources to understand degree requirements in order to execute meaningful program planning towards major exploration and preparation. The Assistant Academic Coordinator will also:
a. Participate in all mandatory initial and ongoing training and professional development sessions.
b. Perform general administrative tasks as needed and complete various projects as assigned by supervisors.
c. Will act as lead on assigned sports, maintaining a regular schedule of recurring mentoring sessions as assigned each semester based on student-athlete availability and need.
d. Assist in supervising evening and weekends in the Petersen Academic Center.
e. Will have the potential to work with high profile sports, international, and high risk student-athletes.
f. Will gain experience with APR, GSR, and eligibility certifications.
g. Learn and follow all department policies, University standards of academic integrity, applicable NCAA Bylaws, and confidentiality agreements.
Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree or current enrollment in related graduate degree program strongly preferred.
The Assistant Academic Coordinator intern position will be a 40 week assignment running from August 19, 2019 to May 22, 2020. Dependent on previous experience, professional interest, supervisor discretion, and program availability, the intern will work with Football, Basketball, and Olympic Sports. The maximum number of hours that will be allowed to work in any given week is 32. The intern will not work and will not be paid during University holidays and closures.
