The University of Virginia is a highly competitive Division I program committed to academic and athletic excellence. The Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing will lead the department’s marketing and fan engagement strategies, in-game productions and special events, executes promotional and advertising campaigns, assists with sponsorship activation, and supports revenue generating initiatives for the University of Virginia Athletics department.
Responsibilities include:
- Direct the day-to-day operations of the Strategic Marketing and Fan Engagement unit including performance management of staff and the development and implementation of individual sport marketing initiatives.
- Directly oversee and execute marketing, promotional and revenue generation plans for the football and men’s basketball programs - including oversight of the advertising strategy and budget - that drive increases in both revenue, brand awareness, and attendance across both programs.
- Create compelling fan and student engagement initiatives with the goal of creating memorable and unique experiences for fans and student athletes.
- Manage and execute digital marketing strategy including, but not limited to; Athletics email database, banner ads, VirginaSports.com, the Virginia Athletics app, and other digital avenues.
- Oversee game-day sponsor fulfillment including print, game-day promotion, on-court promotions, game-day hospitality, game-day messaging of sponsorships and promotions.
- Collaborate with the ticket department to help define the overarching business goals and execute season ticket member engagement and revenue generation campaigns.
- Execute student specific outreach plans and utilize grassroots marketing strategies to increase attendance at athletic events.
- Partner with other External Operations and University colleagues to define and execute the brand strategy across all channels (web, digital, print).
- In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 5+ years of sports marketing experience required.
- Five or more years of marketing experience, with a strong emphasis on marketing football and men’s basketball preferred.
- Master's degree in a related field and three years of related experience preferred.
- Additional experience may be used on a one-to-one basis to offset educational requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of NCAA, ACC and University rules and regulations.
- Demonstrated marketing management skills, as well as the ability to work effectively with decision-makers across many levels.
- Extensive knowledge of strategic analysis, customer segmentation strategies and business and marketing planning.
- Strategic thinking and leadership skills, as well as advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent project manager with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to motivate, develop, and train staff, including willingness to roll up your sleeves and lead by example.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and presence at all levels and for all audiences.
- Ability to troubleshoot, think creatively, and resolve conflicts.
- Prior experience in planning and managing budgets.
