Provides comprehensive healthcare to student-athletes including evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to return athletes to a competitive performance level.
Major Duties: Oversees medical coverage for assigned sports teams. Primary sport responsibilities include football and track and field. Coordinates and attends weekly physician visits for student-athletes.
Communicates with others in the department on matters regarding the health and well-being of student-athletes with the ability to exercise authority on these topics.
Meets with prospective student-athletes and their parents during campus visits and assists with medical evaluations during recruiting. Assists with medical hardship waivers and medical disqualifications.
Provides practice, home game, and travel coverage with assigned teams. Coordinates coverage and scheduling for summer and non-traditional conditioning sessions.
Completes administrative duties such as maintaining and tracking inventory and medical records. Submits insurance claims to an athletic insurance coordinator. Assists in scheduling and communicating annual pre-participation physical examinations for incoming student-athletes.
Completes required continuing education requirements for professional development to maintain professional certification and licensure requirements. Coordinates and instructs medical emergency training for coaching and administrative staff.
Assists with the coordination and administration of institutional drug testing.
Provides secondary medical coverage for high-risk sport competitions.
May evaluate student-athlete and NCAA compliance issues.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in related field from an accredited institution.
One year’s relevant experience.
Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
American Red Cross Training Instructor certification or ability to obtain certification within probationary period.
Michigan Athletic Trainer license or ability to obtain licensure by hire date.
Ability to work irregular shifts and extended hours, including weekends and holidays.

In an effort to better define and measure what comprehensive excellence and the holistic development of Bronco Student-Athletes, Western Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and Director of Athletics Dan Bartholomae have unveiled Broncos REIGN: WMU Athletics’ Strategic Plan.
REIGN is the acronym for WMU’s mission and stands for Reign as champions; Empower those we serve; Inspire community; Grow leaders, and Navigate and adapt.

Broncos Reign took the values and priorities of the department and developed them into six strategic goals:
